Title. "Public Squares. Re-Generation Re-animating and Remapping the City".
This artwork series involves creating new public squares in the city to create a metaphor for regenerating the city. In addition afterwards, the public are invited to find and re-discover these squares as urban wanderers (flaneurs) and intervene to create new situations and regenerate these spaces over again. Using the map one can wander around the city to find the spaces and the public squares made by Stanza. Each new public square measures 1 square foot and is big enough to stand in. You can use the map to find the squares in the city or wander around at random. If you make new things in these spaces or make your own squares send me some photos.
Where is the heart and soul of the city.
On returning to Liverpool I was struck by the concrete fields the same ones I remembered from twenty years earlier....nothing seemed to have changed in the city. Infact Liverpool is a city that seems abandoned outside the commercialism of the new L1 which has become the third cathedral of the city, a monument to shopping, in a city with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.
- This art project "Public Squares" was part of "The Golden Opportunity" programme at FACT (Foundation Of Art And Creative Technology).
- This artwork supports a series of arts interventions by Stanza in which he addresses issues that have a negative impact on people’s experience of city centres.
- This programme of artworks is intended to encourage people to consider the "non" spaces left behind in the city.
The artist Stanza made a series of "new public squares" in the city. Here are a selection of these new squares in Liverpool.
